Things may not have gone smoothly for myself if I did not have a medical insurance when I was recently hospitalized due to a dengue fever. I stay around Jalan Besar area, regularly commutes via the Farrer Park MRT and shops in the surrounding shopping centers.
Even though Jalan Besar was a developed area in Singapore, I did not realize that the area was in fact a red dengue cluster. When I was admitted into a hospital, the doctors told me that there is no medication for dengue fever and gave me some paracetamol and drips. To my surprise, the hospital bill amounted to around S$10,600 (!), despite of no surgery at all.
I was admitted into a private hospital, which gave me very fast and efficient service. Upon admission, I was told that only a S$700/night-room was available, as all lower-class rooms are full. Fortunately, my insurance policy can cover that cost. In addition to covering my expenses, my policy also provides me with a S$300/night hospital income so I do not need to worry about losing a source of money while I am unable to work.
Since I’m insured, I can get the best doctor and treatment available without worrying about the bills so I can focus on my treatment. By having a medical insurance policy saved me a lot of money and spared me from the unnecessary stress of funding my healthcare.
In short, my hospitalization have highlighted that a medical insurance is a necessity. By getting yourself (and your family members) covered by an adequate medical insurance policy is of utmost importance. It is also something that you should not delay.
