The first and most obvious one is the fact that the game forces players to walk around. People have to visit certain places designated as Pokestops or ‘gyms’ to access certain features of the game, and they have to walk a certain distance to incubate an egg to hatch new Pokemons. The phone’s location tracker can detect when players are traveling inside a vehicle, so there is no way to cheat and people have to walk.
This gameplay method has a massive potential to combat people’s increasingly sedentary lifestyle. According to Dr. Raj Bhardwaj in Canada, the time spent walking is most likely replacing time spent sitting or lying in bed playing other games, which is excellent considering how sitting is very bad for your health.
The experience is an excellent way to combat boredom. Let yourself wander around to new places you’ve never went to, and who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a serene park, a beautiful historic building or an exciting cycling path.
Matt Hoffman, clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M University’s College of Nursing, said that Pokemon GO is “bringing people together, providing opportunity for social interaction and increasing our sense of belonging, which can have a positive impact on our emotional and mental health.”
All in all, Pokemon GO certainly does have legitimate health benefits. So are you ready to catch ‘em all?
