While some of us may hear about it, many people do not fully understand about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ‘ADHD’ in short. Many even asked whetherADHDisactuallydiseasewhere in fact it is not. Instead, ADHD isa medical condition that can bring us or our children closer to a disadvantaged situation.
ADHDis one of the most common mental disorders in the world that affect children. Globally,it is estimated that ADHD affects 10 percent of the population. A child with ADHD has differences in brain development and brain activity compared to a normal child. The differences result in the child suffering from ADHD, having challenges to focus and pay attentionand control their impulse. A child with ADHD is observed as hyperactive and
lackself control.
Depending on the level of severity of the ADHD,itwould be rather difficult for a child with ADHD to live a normal life.Parents with children suffering from ADHD mayalsoencounter tough challenges as more monitoring and supervision are required. It is expected that children with ADHD will have emotional problems and have low social skills.
ADHD could also affect academic performance inchildrenthrough hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity. Even though they may have equal or moreintelligence than a normal child, those affected by ADHD tend to struggle in school. Difficulties in remembering and paying attention as well as disorganization affect academic performance of children with ADHD.
Although they appear to be energetic and outgoing due to their hyperactiveness, it is difficult forthem to maintain friendship. Children with ADHD tend to be emotionally immature and agressive, which result in their peers avoiding them. In general, these problems with emotions continue to develop until these children reach adulthood. Even as an adult, people with ADHD may not reach a 100% level of emotional maturity. Anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder also tend to occur among people with ADHD during their adulthood, especially in cases where they did not receive proper treatment when they werestill children.
Although it is not curable at the moment, there are treatments available that can help one manage and cope with the situation. Treatment for ADHD can be expensive as special education needs may be required for the affected children so that they can receive the best treatment. And, one of the recommended ways that you can do to cover the ADHD treatment isthrough having a suitableinsurancescheme that may offer a rider to cover child’s condition. Besides the ADHD, it is best if one’s child is covered across two other the most common developmental conditions:autism and dyslexia.
