First and foremost is to visit several potential places. Never rely solely on websites or brochures to make your decision, as these can be deceptive sometimes. Take some time to visit the childcare and don’t stop at the reception, but ask to go inside and see how the caretakers interact with the children. Note the activities that they have prepared, how they communicate with the kids, whether they are sufficiently attentive, whether there is someone with first aid qualifications, and so on. Basically, you need to be sure that you can leave your child in their care without fear.
Second step is related to the first one. While you’re visiting, also pay attention to the infrastructure and other facilities in addition to the caretakers. Does the facility, as a whole, have good security? Is the care room comfortable and clean enough? Is it too hot or too cold? Is it well-lit or too dark? Are the provided toys suitable for your kid’s age? Do they have sufficient medicine in stock? What about emergency exits? Some of these concerns may seem trivial, but your children may spend weeks or months there and to them, these are not trivial at all.
Fourth, always keep your eyes and ears peeled for word of mouth among other parents. Recommendations (and equally important, warnings!) from other working parents can be invaluable when choosing childcares, particularly from those who live in your proximity. These suggestions can tell you in advance which childcares are worth a second look, which ones to avoid at all costs, and all those in between. Of course, you should always drop by on your own to see the place on your own and not rely completely on word of mouth.
Finally, check whether the childcare has any kind of insurance policy should anything unfortunate happen. If they don’t, this may be a red flag. If they do, ask them to explain in detail the terms and conditions of their policy and how they affect you specifically. For example, what will happen if a natural disaster strike? If your child is injured in any way while in their care, will there be hospital coverage? What will happen in the event of a fire? Also consider getting your own private insurance to protect your kid, with the same considerations as above. While we take steps to ensure that we put our children in the safest childcare possible, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
